Picea Abies
Norway Spruce
Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is a large evergreen tree with green needles and a strong pyramidal outline. Young trees make a dense, upright presence; older specimens develop hanging branchlets that give the canopy a softer, layered appearance.
Long, pendulous cones add interest beneath the branches. Its comparatively fast growth and year-round foliage make it useful for substantial screens and windbreaks. This is a tree for generous spaces, where both its height and its broad lower branches can develop without crowding buildings or other plantings.
Choose full sun and moist, well-drained soil, preferably acidic. Norway spruce performs best where summers are relatively cool. Give young trees steady moisture while they establish, and select a site that can accommodate a large tree for many years.
