Glaucous Spanish Fir

Abies pinsapo ‘Glauca’ is a highly ornamental blue form of Spanish fir, prized for its intense silvery-blue to steel-blue needles and bold, architectural texture. As with the species, the short, stiff needles are arranged radially around the stems, giving the branches a distinctive bottle-brush appearance unlike most firs.

It forms a dense, pyramidal to broadly conical evergreen with a strong central leader and slow to moderate growth. The blue coloration is strongest in full sun and remains attractive throughout the year, making it one of the most dramatic blue firs available.

‘Glauca’ prefers well-drained soils and tolerates limestone and slightly alkaline conditions, which sets it apart from many Abies. Best performance is in cooler, well-aerated sites with protection from excessive heat and poor drainage. Hardy in USDA Zones 6–8, it is most often used as a specimen tree, focal point, or collector conifer, valued for its exceptional blue color, unique needle arrangement, and strong architectural presence.
