Acer Macrophyllum 'Champion Tree'

Champion Tree Big Leaf Maple

Acer macrophyllum ‘Champion Tree’ is a selected form of bigleaf maple noted for its exceptionally large leaves, vigorous growth, and classic Pacific Northwest character. The huge, palmately lobed leaves—often among the largest of any maple—emerge fresh green in spring, create deep shade through summer, and turn golden yellow to yellow-brown in fall.

This cultivar develops a broad, spreading crown with sturdy limbs and an imposing presence, making it a true landscape anchor. Growth is fast under favorable conditions, and mature trees provide substantial canopy and habitat value.

‘Champion Tree’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, though it tolerates a range of conditions once established. It is best suited to cooler climates and regions with adequate moisture. Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9.

Mature size:

Height: 60–80+ ft

Width: 50–70+ ft

Ideal for parks, large properties, estates, and naturalized landscapes, Acer macrophyllum ‘Champion Tree’ is valued for its dramatic foliage, fast growth, and commanding shade-tree presence.
