Acer japonicum (Fullmoon Maple) is a graceful deciduous maple native to Japan, admired for its large, rounded leaves, refined structure, and outstanding fall color. The broad, softly lobed leaves emerge fresh green in spring, remain lush through summer, and turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and scarlet in autumn—often among the finest fall displays of any maple.

The tree develops an upright to rounded habit with layered branching and a calm, elegant presence. Compared to Acer palmatum, Acer japonicum has larger leaves and a bolder texture, making it an excellent specimen tree.

Acer japonicum grows best in partial shade, though it tolerates full sun in cooler climates. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils and benefits from protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8.
