Acer flabellatum (often treated botanically as Acer japonicum) is a handsome deciduous maple valued for its large, fan-shaped leaves, elegant structure, and exceptional fall color. The broad, deeply lobed foliage emerges fresh green in spring, remains lush through summer, and turns brilliant shades of orange, scarlet, and crimson in autumn.

The tree develops an upright to rounded habit with layered branching and a refined, architectural presence. Compared to many Japanese maples, it has larger leaves and a bolder texture, making it stand out as a specimen tree.

Acer flabellatum grows best in partial shade but tolerates full sun in cooler climates. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils and benefits from protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8.
