Gingerbread Maple-Paperbark

Acer griseum × nikoense is a highly ornamental paperbark maple hybrid that combines the best traits of paperbark maple (Acer griseum) and Nikko maple (Acer nikoense). It is especially valued for its exfoliating cinnamon-brown bark, improved vigor, and more reliable landscape performance compared to pure Acer griseum.

The bark peels in attractive curls and plates, often developing earlier and more consistently than paperbark maple. Leaves are trifoliate, emerging green in spring, remaining clean through summer, and turning brilliant shades of orange, red, and scarlet in fall.

This hybrid forms an upright to rounded tree with stronger growth and a fuller canopy than Acer griseum, while retaining a refined, elegant appearance. It is generally easier to establish and more adaptable to varying site conditions.

It performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but tolerates a wider range of conditions than paperbark maple. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8.
