Acer monspessulanum (Montpellier Maple) is a compact, drought-tolerant deciduous maple native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean. It’s valued for its small, leathery, three-lobed leaves, dense branching, and excellent tolerance of heat, wind, and dry soils.
Foliage is glossy dark green through summer, with fall color ranging from yellow to orange and occasional red. The tree forms a rounded to irregular crown, sometimes multi-stemmed, and maintains a sturdy, long-lived structure.
Montpellier maple performs best in full sun and well-drained soils, including rocky, limestone, and alkaline sites. It is notably resilient in urban and low-water landscapes. Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9.
