Miyabei Maple

Acer miyabei (Miyabe Maple) is a tough, adaptable deciduous shade tree native to Japan, valued for its thick, glossy leaves, strong structure, and exceptional durability. The leaves are noticeably larger and heavier-textured than many maples, emerging fresh green in spring, remaining clean through summer, and turning clear yellow to yellow-orange in fall.

The tree develops a dense, rounded to upright crown with excellent branch strength and wind resistance. Growth is moderate, and the overall form is sturdy and long-lived, making it a reliable choice for demanding sites.

Acer miyabei thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to a wide range of soils, including clay and alkaline soils, provided drainage is adequate. It tolerates heat, drought once established, urban pollution, wind, and pruning better than many other maples. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–8.
