Magnolia Shirazz

Shirazz Magnolia

Magnolia ‘Shirazz’ is a deciduous flowering tree with large, upright tulip- to goblet-shaped blooms in rich burgundy-red to burgundy-pink, opening to reveal a paler interior. It has a compact, upright habit when young and is especially valued for its dramatic spring flower color on bare branches before the leaves fully emerge.

Type: Deciduous tree
Mature Size: 8–12' W x 15–25' H
10-Year Size: 6–13' W x 6.5–13' H
USDA Zones: 5a–9b
Form: Upright, narrowly conical to vase-shaped when young, becoming broader with age
Light: Full sun to part shade
Soil / Water: Moist, rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil; regular water during establishment
Bloom Time / Length: Early to mid-spring; main flush in April in many climates
Wildlife: Flowers may attract some pollinators such as butterflies, though wildlife value is not a primary feature of this cultivar.

Features & Landscape Uses: An excellent specimen tree for smaller landscapes, courtyards, and foundation or mixed-border plantings where a strong vertical accent is wanted. Its deep wine-red flowers are among its standout ornamental traits, and the relatively compact habit makes it easier to place than many larger magnolias. Late frosts can damage flower buds, so a somewhat sheltered site is beneficial.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and mulch to keep the root zone cool and evenly moist. Water regularly while establishing and during dry spells. Choose a protected location out of harsh wind and late frost pockets when possible. Prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed.
