Shirazz Magnolia

Magnolia ‘Shirazz’ is a deciduous flowering tree with large, upright tulip- to goblet-shaped blooms in rich burgundy-red to burgundy-pink, opening to reveal a paler interior. It has a compact, upright habit when young and is especially valued for its dramatic spring flower color on bare branches before the leaves fully emerge.

Its deep wine-red flowers are among its standout ornamental traits, and the relatively compact habit makes it easier to place than many larger magnolias. Late frosts can damage flower buds, so a somewhat sheltered site is beneficial.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and mulch to keep the root zone cool and evenly moist. Water regularly while establishing and during dry spells. Choose a protected location out of harsh wind and late frost pockets when possible. Prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed.
