Magnolia stellata ‘Centennial’ is a deciduous flowering tree or large shrub known for its vigorous habit and exceptionally large, many-tepaled white flowers that often show a soft pink blush in bud or at the flower base. Borne on bare branches in late winter to early spring, the blooms create a showy early-season display before the foliage emerges. This cultivar was selected and named by the Arnold Arboretum for its centennial and is often considered one of the finest star magnolia selections.

Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent as a specimen near entries, patios, and windows, or as a focal point in foundation beds and smaller gardens. Its compact size, early flowering, and refined branching make it especially useful where a dramatic spring display is wanted without the scale of larger magnolias. Flowers can be damaged by late frosts, so a somewhat protected site is beneficial.

Care: Plant in a sheltered location out of strong wind when possible, especially in colder parts of its range. Mulch the root zone to keep soil cool and evenly moist, and avoid poorly drained sites. Prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed. Late frosts and, in some climates, ice damage can affect flowers or branches.
