Magnolia x soulangiana Verbanica

Verbanica Magnolia

Magnolia × soulangeana ‘Verbanica’ is a deciduous flowering tree or large shrub prized for its cup-shaped rosy-pink flowers with a white interior, borne in spring before or as the leaves emerge. It is a later-flowering saucer magnolia selection, which helps reduce the risk of bloom damage from late frosts compared with earlier cultivars.

Type: Deciduous tree or large shrub.

Mature Size: 15–25' W x 20–25' H.

USDA Zones: 5a–9b. I used the broader overlapping range reported for saucer magnolia cultivars, since some cultivar-specific sources list only general landscape performance rather than a hard zone range.

Form: Upright, broad-pyramidal to bushy-spreading with age.

Light: Full sun to part shade.

Soil / Water: Moist, organically rich, well-drained soil; regular moisture during establishment; avoid prolonged drought or poorly drained sites. This combines the cultivar notes with standard saucer magnolia culture guidance.

Bloom Time / Length: Early to mid-spring, but later than many other saucer magnolia cultivars.

Wildlife: Early flowers may support pollinating insects, especially beetle pollinators typical of magnolias, though this cultivar is grown mainly for ornamental display. This wildlife note is an inference from magnolia flower ecology and the parent species.

Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent as a specimen, lawn tree, patio accent, or focal point in mixed borders and residential landscapes. Its later bloom time is one of its best traits, and the rosy-pink exterior with white interior gives it a classic two-tone saucer magnolia look. Fall color may turn coppery-brown.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and mulch to keep the root zone cool and evenly moist. Water regularly while establishing, protect from harsh wind when possible, and prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed
