Magnolia x Spectrum

Spectrum magnolia

Magnolia × ‘Spectrum’ is a deciduous flowering tree with large, upright goblet-shaped blooms that open rich reddish purple to deep pink on the outside and paler pink to creamy white within. This small to medium tree is upright when young, then broadens into an oval to broadly pyramidal crown with age. It is a U.S. National Arboretum hybrid, related to ‘Galaxy,’ and is valued for its later spring bloom, which can help reduce winter bud damage.

Type: Deciduous tree
Mature Size: 20–30' W x 20–30' H
USDA Zones: 5b–8b
Form: Upright when young, becoming oval to broad pyramidal with age
Light: Full sun to part shade
Soil / Water: Moist, rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil; regular moisture during establishment and during dry spells
Bloom Time / Length: Mid- to late spring; flowers open before or with emerging foliage, depending on climate
Wildlife: Early flowers may support pollinating insects, especially beetle pollinators typical of magnolias, though this cultivar is grown mainly for ornamental display. This is partly inferred from magnolia flower ecology rather than a cultivar-specific wildlife listing.

Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent as a specimen, lawn tree, patio accent, or focal point in mixed borders where its strong pink-purple flower color can be appreciated up close. Its later flowering habit and narrower youth form make it a useful choice for smaller landscapes and for sites where earlier magnolias are more likely to lose buds or blooms to cold.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and mulch to keep roots cool and evenly moist. Water regularly while establishing, avoid prolonged drought or soggy conditions, and prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed. A somewhat sheltered site is helpful for best flower display.
