Meehania Cordata
Creeping Mint, Meehan's Mint
Meehania cordata
A low-growing perennial groundcover with trailing, rooting stems and soft, heart-shaped to rounded green leaves that form a loose to dense carpet in shade. In late spring to early summer, it produces lavender to violet-blue, two-lipped flowers with spotted throats held just above the foliage. It is a mint-family native valued for its softer, better-behaved spread compared with more aggressive groundcovers.
Type: Perennial groundcover
Mature Size: 4–32" wide x 4–8" high
USDA Zones: 4a–8b
Form: Creeping, mat-forming
Light: Part shade to full shade
Soil / Water: Moist to average, well-drained, humusy soil; moderate water, prefers even moisture
Bloom Time / Length: Late spring to early summer
Wildlife: Nectar source for small pollinating insects
Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting, and naturalistic groundcover use where a soft, flowering carpet is wanted. It spreads slowly by stolons, making it useful as a more restrained alternative to ajuga or ground ivy in moist shade.
Care: Plant in part to full shade in soil rich in organic matter. Keep evenly moist during establishment and avoid prolonged drought for the best appearance. It can be trimmed or divided if it spreads beyond its space, though it is generally considered well-mannered
