Phlox Subulata 'Red Wing'
Red Wing Creeping Phlox
Red Wing Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata ‘Red Wing’, also sold as ‘Red Wings’) makes a vivid spring display with deep pink to crimson flowers marked by darker centers. At peak bloom, the flowers crowd together above the green foliage and give the planting an almost solid layer of color.
Its narrow evergreen leaves form a low, spreading mat. The close growth works well beside stones and along the front of a border, where it can expand without hiding smaller neighbors. Flowers provide a seasonal draw for butterflies and other pollinators.
Give this phlox full sun and freely draining soil. It handles sandy or rocky sites and becomes drought tolerant once established. Trim lightly after the main flowering period to encourage a neat carpet of new growth.
