Pinus Mugo Valley Cushion
Valley Cushion Mugho Pine
Pinus mugo ‘Valley Cushion’
Valley Cushion Mugo Pine stays low while extending outward into a dense evergreen cushion. Short green needles surround the shoots, and reddish young buds provide a small seasonal contrast.
Its width becomes much greater than its height. Use it beside rocks or along an open bed edge, leaving enough ground for the branches to spread without crowding.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Water the root zone during establishment and leave room for the branches to develop. A site with cool summers generally suits this pine better than prolonged hot, humid conditions.
Approximate garden size
• Width: 4 ft; larger with age
• Height: 1 ft; larger with age
These are planning estimates for an established garden plant, commonly reached in 10–25 years, rather than final mature limits.
Hardiness
• Hardy to USDA Zone 2; local summer conditions also affect suitability.
