Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Gold Rush’
Also commonly known as ‘Ogon’, this deciduous conifer is a golden-foliaged selection of dawn redwood with a fast-growing, pyramidal habit. New growth emerges bright chartreuse to golden yellow, holds much of that color through summer, then turns orange-brown before dropping in fall. It also develops attractive fissured bark with age. The American Conifer Society notes that ‘Ogon’ is the original valid cultivar name, while ‘Gold Rush’/‘Goldrush’ became widely used in the nursery trade.

Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent as a specimen tree, focal point, or large-scale accent where its golden foliage can contrast with darker evergreens. It works especially well near water features or in spacious landscapes where its upright form and seasonal color can be appreciated. Compared with the species, Oregon State describes it as somewhat slower-growing, with bright yellow spring foliage that retains much of its color through summer.

Care: Plant in full sun for best foliage color. Give it room, deep soil, and consistent moisture, especially early on. It transplants fairly easily and performs best in moist, well-drained soil. Water deeply during establishment; after that, reduce frequency but do not let it stay dry for long periods.
