Lysimachia Clethroides

Gooseneck Loosesrife, Lysimachia

Lysimachia clethroides (Gooseneck Loosestrife) is a vigorous, clump-forming to spreading perennial with upright stems and narrow, pointed green foliage. Its distinctive small white flowers are packed into dense, tapered spikes that arch gracefully at the tip, creating the characteristic “gooseneck” shape from mid to late summer. It is especially effective in moist garden soils, rain gardens, and naturalized plantings, but it can spread assertively by rhizomes.

Type: Perennial
Mature Size: 24–36" W × 24–36" H
USDA Zones: 4a–8b
Form: Upright, clump-forming to spreading

Light: Full sun to part shade
Soil / Water: Rich, moist, well-drained soils; moderate to high water, prefers consistent moisture
Bloom Time / Length: Mid to late summer; long-lasting (4–6 weeks)

Wildlife: Bees, butterflies

Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for rain gardens, moist borders, naturalized areas, and pond or stream edges. The curved white flower spikes add strong texture and movement to the landscape and are also useful as cut flowers. Best where it has room to spread or where spreading can be managed.

Care:
Plant in consistently moist soil for best performance. Divide or thin regularly to control spread, especially in smaller beds. Cut back after flowering or leave standing for seasonal texture. Avoid very dry soils.
