Virginia Bluebells
Virginia Cowslip, Longwort Oysterleaf,Roanoke Bells
Virginia Bluebells marks spring with clusters of nodding blue flowers opening from pink buds. The broad leaves emerge with purple tones, then soften to green with a bluish cast as the flowering stems lengthen.
This woodland perennial retreats below ground in summer. Combine it with later-growing shade plants so the space remains attractive after its foliage fades. Grouped plants create a stronger seasonal display and provide flowers for visiting pollinators.
Plant in partial or deep shade with moist, humus-rich soil and good drainage. Leave the foliage in place while it is green so the plant can prepare for the next spring.
