Rhododendron Calndulaceum
Flame azalea (Rhododendron calendulaceum) is a deciduous woodland shrub with vivid yellow, orange, or red flowers. The upright buds and flared blooms bring warm color to the garden from late spring into early summer.
Its spreading framework can develop into a broad colony-like planting. The fine, shredding bark adds detail after leaf fall, while the flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Grow in partial shade with acidic, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. Protect from intense afternoon sun and avoid dense, poorly drained clay. Prune after flowering if needed.
