Penstemon heterophyllus is a California-native herbaceous perennial to short-lived subshrub with narrow, glossy green to bluish-green foliage and loose clusters of tubular flowers in shades of blue, violet, lavender, purple, and sometimes magenta. It blooms from spring into early summer, with some cultivars extending into summer, and is especially useful in dry, sunny gardens, rock gardens, pollinator plantings, slopes, and waterwise borders. It is native to California foothills, grasslands, chaparral, and open woodland areas.

Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for xeriscapes, California native gardens, rock gardens, slopes, dry borders, pollinator gardens, containers, and sunny mixed perennial beds. The blue-to-violet tubular flowers are especially valuable because true blue tones are less common among drought-tolerant perennials. Good companion plants include salvia, yarrow, artemisia, nepeta, eriogonum, ornamental grasses, sedum, and other dry-garden perennials.

Care:
Plant in full sun with excellent drainage. Do not overwater once established, and avoid rich, wet soils that can shorten plant life. Deadhead after bloom to encourage a tidier habit and possible rebloom. Lightly trim after flowering or in early spring to maintain shape, but avoid cutting hard into old woody growth on older plants.
