Heavy Metal Switchgrass

‘Heavy Metal’ is a warm-season native ornamental grass perennial valued for its stiff, upright habit and metallic blue to blue-green foliage. It forms a strong vertical clump through summer, then sends up finely textured, pink-tinged airy flower panicles in midsummer. The foliage turns yellow, sometimes with orange tones, in fall before fading to tan-beige for winter interest. Seed plumes often persist into winter, adding movement, texture, and food for birds.

Excellent for prairie gardens, meadow plantings, rain gardens, mass plantings, low screens, foundation plantings, erosion control, winter-interest plantings, and as a vertical accent in perennial borders. ‘Heavy Metal’ is especially useful where a more upright, blue-toned switchgrass is wanted. Its metallic foliage contrasts well with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, sedums, asters, alliums, and golden or burgundy foliage plants.

Care:
Cut old foliage back to a few inches above the ground in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Avoid heavy fertilizer, which can cause weaker stems or flopping. Best color and form develop in full sun with average to lean soil. Divide in spring only when clumps become too large or the center begins to thin.
