Acer grandidentatum ‘Schmidt’ is a selected form of bigtooth maple prized for its compact habit, excellent cold hardiness, and reliable fall color. Leaves are thick and three- to five-lobed, emerging medium green in spring and summer before turning brilliant shades of orange, red, and scarlet in autumn, often with strong consistency.

Compared to seedling bigtooth maples, ‘Schmidt’ develops a more uniform, rounded to oval crown and remains smaller and more controlled, making it well suited to residential landscapes. Branch structure is sturdy, and the tree shows good wind and drought tolerance once established.

‘Schmidt’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, but it adapts to clay and alkaline conditions better than many maples. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–8, it is well suited to colder and drier regions.
