‘Shinko’ is a productive deciduous fruit tree and Asian pear cultivar known for medium to large, round, golden-brown russeted fruit with crisp, juicy, very sweet flesh. The fruit is eaten firm and crisp at harvest, more like an apple-textured pear, rather than softened indoors like many European pears. It blooms in spring with white flowers, carries glossy green foliage through summer, and ripens a late-season crop that stores well. ‘Shinko’ is also valued for showing good resistance to fire blight compared with many other Asian pear cultivars.

Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for small orchards, edible landscapes, backyard fruit gardens, espalier, sunny borders, and Asian pear collections. ‘Shinko’ is especially useful where a sweet, crisp, russeted Asian pear with good storage quality and better disease resistance is wanted. It is a good fresh-eating pear and can also be used in salads, preserves, drying, and light cooking.

Care:
Plant in full sun with good air circulation. Prune annually during dormancy to maintain structure, control height, and encourage fruiting wood. Thin fruit when crops are heavy to improve fruit size and reduce limb stress. Monitor for fire blight, pear psylla, codling moth, scab, rust, and Japanese beetle damage, even though ‘Shinko’ is considered more fire-blight resistant than many pears.

Pollination:
Requires or strongly benefits from cross-pollination with another compatible pear. Good partners include other Asian pears such as ‘Hosui,’ ‘Chojuro,’ ‘Kikusui,’ and some European pears such as ‘Bartlett’ when bloom times overlap.
