Peony Charlies White

Peony Charlies White

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Charlie’s White’
Charlie’s White Peony / Garden Peony

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Charlie’s White’ is a classic herbaceous peony with dark green foliage and large, fragrant, double white flowers with creamy-white to pale yellow inner petals. It blooms in late spring to early summer and is valued for its clean white color, full flower form, fragrance, and usefulness as a cut flower. The American Peony Society lists ‘Charlie’s White’ as a lactiflora cultivar introduced by Klehm in 1951.

Type: Herbaceous perennial
Mature Size: 30–40 in. wide × 32–40 in. tall
USDA Zones: 3a–8b
Form: Upright, rounded clump; large double blooms may need support
Light: Full sun to part shade
Soil / Water: Fertile, well-drained soil; moderate water, especially during establishment and bud development
Bloom Time / Length: Late spring to early summer; individual plants usually bloom about 7–10 days
Wildlife: Flowers may attract bees; generally deer and rabbit resistant

Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for perennial borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, foundation plantings, formal gardens, and mass plantings. The white double blooms pair well with iris, salvia, catmint, allium, nepeta, hardy geraniums, roses, and ornamental grasses. Kansas Roots lists it as a white, bomb-type flower that performs well both in the garden and as a vase flower.

Care:
Plant crowns shallowly, with eyes about 1–2 inches below the soil surface. Provide full sun, good air circulation, and avoid soggy soil. Because the blooms are large and double, staking or a peony ring is helpful before flowering. Deadhead after bloom, leave foliage through summer to feed the roots, then cut stems to the ground after frost.
