Peony Felix Supreme
Peony Felix Supreme
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Felix Supreme’ is a herbaceous garden peony with glossy green foliage and large, fragrant, fully double flowers in deep ruby-red to rich raspberry-red tones. It blooms in late spring to early summer and is valued for its strong color, full flower form, fragrance, and usefulness as a cut flower. The American Peony Society lists ‘Felix Supreme’ as a lactiflora peony and notes that its stem and flower meet cut-flower requirements.
Type: Herbaceous perennial
Mature Size: 24–36 in. wide × 24–32 in. tall
USDA Zones: 4a–8b; often grown successfully in Zone 3 with winter hardiness typical of herbaceous peonies
Form: Upright, rounded clump; large double blooms may need support
Light: Full sun to part shade
Soil / Water: Fertile, well-drained soil; moderate water, especially during establishment and bud development
Bloom Time / Length: Late spring to early summer; usually 7–10 days of main bloom, longer in cool weather
Wildlife: Flowers may attract bees; generally deer and rabbit resistant
Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for perennial borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, formal beds, foundation plantings, and mass plantings. The deep red-pink double blooms combine well with white peonies, iris, salvia, catmint, allium, nepeta, hardy geraniums, roses, and ornamental grasses. Garden Center Marketing lists ‘Felix Supreme’ at 24–32 in. tall, Zones 4–8, and as a long-lasting cut flower.
Care:
Plant crowns shallowly, with eyes about 1–2 inches below the soil surface. Provide full sun, good air circulation, and avoid soggy soil. Because the blooms are large and double, staking or a peony ring is helpful before flowering. Deadhead after bloom, leave foliage through summer to feed the roots, then cut stems to the ground after frost.
