Physostegia virginiana ‘Miss Manners’ is a compact, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with glossy dark green foliage and upright spikes of pure white tubular flowers. It blooms from midsummer into early fall and is a better-behaved selection of obedient plant, spreading less aggressively than the straight species. Missouri Botanical Garden notes that ‘Miss Manners’ is a naturally occurring seedling of Physostegia virginiana ‘Rosea’ and was patented as PP12,637 in 2002.

Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for perennial borders, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, rain-garden edges, native-style plantings, and cutting gardens. The white flower spikes give a clean vertical accent and pair well with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, bee balm, phlox, ornamental grasses, sedges, asters, and blue or purple salvias. RHS describes it as producing white tubular flowers in short upright spikes from midsummer to early autumn and notes that the flowers are good for cutting.

Care:
Plant in sun to part shade with consistent moisture. Deadhead after flowering to reduce self-seeding and keep the plant tidy. Cut stems back after bloom or at the end of the season. Although ‘Miss Manners’ is less spreading than many obedient plants, divide or edge clumps as needed if they expand beyond their space.
