Persimmons Russian Beauty

Russian Beauty Persimmons

Diospyros ‘Rosseyanka’, often sold as Russian Beauty, is a cold-hardy hybrid persimmon combining American persimmon hardiness with Asian persimmon fruit quality. It produces glossy green foliage, attractive fall color, and round orange fruit that ripens in fall. The fruit is generally astringent until fully soft, so it should be allowed to ripen completely before eating. Appalachian Foothills Fruits and Nuts lists Rosseyanka with the alternative names Rossiyanka and Russian Beauty, while Thomas Fruit Trees notes that Russian Beauty was developed at the Nikitsky Botanical Garden in Crimea and is thought to be a 50/50 hybrid of American and Asian persimmon species.

Type: Deciduous fruit tree
Mature Size: 15–25 ft. wide × 15–25 ft. tall; may stay smaller with pruning
USDA Zones: 5b–8b; sometimes listed as Zone 6 for reliable fruit ripening
Form: Small to medium rounded fruit tree
Light: Full sun
Soil / Water: Well-drained soil; moderate water during establishment and fruit development
Bloom Time / Length: Late spring; small, inconspicuous flowers
Wildlife: Fruit attracts birds and wildlife; flowers support bees

Features & Landscape Uses:
Excellent for edible landscapes, home orchards, wildlife gardens, sunny specimen plantings, and cold-climate fruit collections. It is valued for improved cold tolerance compared with many Asian persimmons while producing larger, sweeter fruit than many American persimmons. Tree Peony describes ‘Rosseyanka’ as a Russian hybrid that combines American persimmon cold hardiness with larger Asian-type fruit, with 2–3 in. spicy-sweet fruit.

Care:
Plant in full sun in a protected, well-drained location. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells while fruit is sizing. Prune lightly in late winter to shape the tree and remove crossing, damaged, or crowded branches. Harvest when fruit is fully colored and soft; firm fruit is usually astringent. In colder climates, protect young trees from winter wind and late spring frost.
