Diablo Ninebark

Diablo Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Monlo’, also marketed as Diabolo) is a large deciduous shrub with deep purple foliage. The dark leaves give a strong backdrop to lighter flowers, and clusters of white summer blooms stand out against the richly colored canopy.

Multiple stems develop into a broad shrub with arching branches. After the leaves fall, peeling bark adds another layer of interest to the winter garden. Its eventual size makes it most effective where it can be allowed to fill a generous space.

Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment. If pruning is needed, do it after flowering; selective cuts help preserve the open branching character and make room for fresh stems.
