Maxwell Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Maxwellii’) forms a low, broad mound of stout branches clothed in blue-green needles. Its dense shoots and flattened outline give this evergreen a substantial presence close to the ground.
The plant becomes considerably wider than tall and fits best in a generous foundation bed or rock garden. Clusters of buds add texture at the shoot tips, and established plants can produce hanging cones. Leave space for its broad outline to develop without frequent cutting.
Grow in sun with moist, well-drained soil. Cool summers suit Norway spruce best; avoid waterlogged sites and prolonged drying while roots establish.
