Pinus mugo 'Columnaris'
Columnar Dwarf Mugo Pine
Pinus mugo ‘Columnaris’
Columnaris Mugo Pine brings a narrow upright form to this normally spreading group. Long dark green needles contrast with pale, resin-coated winter buds and glimpses of reddish-orange bark.
The compact vertical crown is useful where an evergreen accent should rise above lower plants. Small cones add interest as the plant develops.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Water the root zone during establishment and leave room for the branches to develop. A site with cool summers generally suits this pine better than prolonged hot, humid conditions.
Approximate garden size
• Width: 4 ft; larger with age
• Height: 8 ft; larger with age
These are planning estimates for an established garden plant, commonly reached in 10–25 years, rather than final mature limits.
Hardiness
• Hardy to USDA Zone 2; local summer conditions also affect suitability.
