Polystichum acrostichoides 'Xmas Fern'
Christmas Fern
Christmas Fern forms a circular clump of sturdy green fronds that keep their color into winter. New growth arrives as silvery, tightly curled fiddleheads, then opens into upright and arching foliage.
The clumps enlarge gradually and suit woodland borders or shaded slopes. Planting them in groups provides a persistent layer near the ground and cover for small birds. Like other ferns, this species reproduces by spores rather than flowers.
Choose partial or full shade and humus-rich, well-drained soil. Avoid a waterlogged crown, particularly in winter.
