Prunus maritima
Maritima Plum
Beach plum is a deciduous, suckering shrub for sunny, sandy sites. White spring flowers are followed by small plums that ripen in shades of red, purple or near-black. Birds visit the fruit, and flowers support bees.
Give it full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates dry coastal conditions and salt exposure and works in a naturalized hedge, mass planting or erosion-control planting. Plant at least two beach plums for cross-pollination.
