Sophora japonica
Japanese Pagodatree
Japanese Pagodatree builds a broad crown of finely divided green foliage. In summer, established trees can carry hanging clusters of creamy, pea-shaped flowers, followed by seedpods pinched between the seeds.
The canopy offers shade well into the growing season, with a brief yellow display before leaf fall. Young trees may take years to begin flowering. This species can spread into natural areas in parts of the mid-Atlantic, so check local suitability before planting.
Plant in sun or light shade with well-drained soil and space for the mature crown. Established trees tolerate heat and periods of drought.
