Stachys byz 'Helen von Stein'
Lamb's Ear/Big Ears
Helen von Stein Lamb’s Ear is grown for its broad, pale silver leaves and thick, woolly texture. The foliage gathers close to the ground, making a soft-looking contrast beside darker leaves or upright flowers.
The low planting spreads outward and works as an edging or a patch of groundcover. Leaves may remain through mild winters. Its broad foliage gives the garden texture even when no flowers are present.
Choose sun or partial shade and very well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged wetness on the leaves or around the roots; some afternoon shade is useful in hot locations.
