Syringa vulgaris Ludwig Spaeth
Ludwig Spaeth Lilac
Ludwig Spaeth Lilac (Syringa vulgaris ‘Andenken an Ludwig Späth’) is known for long, slender clusters of deeply colored, wine-red flowers. Their fragrance adds to the late-spring and early-summer display above dark green, heart-shaped leaves.
The deciduous shrub broadens as its branches develop. It is useful as a strong flowering accent in a sunny border, especially beside lighter-flowered shrubs that make its saturated color easier to see.
Give it fertile soil that drains well and is neutral to alkaline. A sunny position supports the strongest flowering; water while the roots establish and mulch without burying the stems.
