Malus domestica 'Liberty' Dwarf

Liberty Dwarf Apple

Malus domestica ‘Liberty’ is a dwarf fruit tree grown for its medium to large bright red apples with crisp, juicy flesh and a sweet-tart flavor. This deciduous apple tree has a rounded, somewhat spreading habit, white spring blossoms, and dependable early- to mid-fall fruit. It is especially valued for outstanding disease resistance, making it one of the best apples for home orchards and lower-spray edible landscapes.

Type: Dwarf fruit tree
Mature Size: 8–10' wide x 8–10' high
USDA Zones: 5a–8b
Form: Rounded, spreading
Light: Full sun
Soil / Water: Fertile, well-drained soil / moderate, consistent moisture
Bloom Time / Length: Early to mid spring / 1–2 weeks
Wildlife: Bees and other pollinators attracted to spring flowers.

Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent for home orchards and edible landscapes, especially where disease resistance is a priority. Fruit typically ripens in September to early October and is good for fresh eating, baking, sauce, and juice. ‘Liberty’ is highly resistant to apple scab and also shows strong resistance to cedar apple rust, powdery mildew, and fire blight. It is often described as somewhat self-fertile, but crops are heavier and more reliable with a compatible pollinator nearby.

Care: Plant in full sun with good air circulation. Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Prune annually in late winter to maintain structure and fruiting wood, and thin heavy crops to improve fruit size and help encourage consistent yearly bearing.
