Midnight Wine Weigela
Midnight Wine weigela (Weigela florida ‘Elvera’) is a very low, rounded shrub grown chiefly for burgundy-purple leaves. It may produce a modest scattering of pink flowers in spring, but the foliage is the main feature.
The compact mound brings dark color to edging, narrow beds, and the front of perennial borders. Growth is slow, particularly during the first season, and its naturally tidy form usually needs little shaping.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate moisture. Water while establishing. If pruning is needed, trim after flowering and avoid removing more of the small framework than necessary.
