Malus domestica ‘Scarlet Spire’ is a columnar apple tree grown for its full-sized scarlet-red fruit and very narrow, upright habit. This deciduous fruit tree bears apples on short spurs along the trunk, with white to pale pink spring blossoms followed by crisp, juicy fruit that is good for fresh eating. Its slim, space-saving form makes it especially useful for patios, tight beds, small home orchards, and even large containers.

Features & Landscape Uses: Excellent for edible landscapes, narrow side yards, courtyards, and container growing. The apples develop along the main stem rather than on wide-spreading branches, so it works well where a traditional apple tree would take up too much room. It is commonly sold as Stark® Scarlet Spire®, and Missouri Botanical Garden lists it as Malus pumila ‘Trajan’ STARK SCARLET SPIRE.

Care: Plant in full sun with good air circulation. Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods. Prune lightly to maintain the narrow form, removing damaged wood and any strong side shoots that disrupt the columnar habit. Container-grown plants need consistent watering and winter protection for the root zone in colder areas.
